The inconspicuous moss

Moss may seem inconspicuous at first glance. Yet it performs a variety of important functions in nature. Mosses grow on bare rocks and arid soils, where their moss cushion helps to accumulate fine material and gradually lay the foundation for soil formation. In this way, mosses prepare the ground for the growth of flowering plants.

Furthermore, mosses are true experts in regulating their water balance. When it rains, they can store many times their own weight in water. During dry periods, they slowly release this water and thus contribute to balancing the global water balance.

Birds use moss as a building material for their nests, and we humans also occasionally use moss as a filling material for wall joints, mattresses, shoe soles or diapers. Not to be neglected is also the aesthetic effect of moss. What could be more beautiful than walking through a forest densely covered with moss on a mild summer day? An experience that pleases both body and mind.

Lake Boniger raised bog

Lake Boniger, located at 2090 meters above sea level, may undoubtedly be considered one of the highlights along the Magic Moos Tour. Nestled in a landscape surrounded by pine and larch forests, the lake is home to a still developing high moor. However, due to its altitude, this moor grows only slowly.

In raised bogs such as Lake Boniger, CO2 is permanently bound in the peat they contain. In this way, peatlands can contribute to mitigating the greenhouse effect. The water surface of the lake is covered by peat moss, which provides a home for dragonfly species that are rare throughout Switzerland, such as the Lesser damselfly or the Alpine mosaic damselfly.
