"We feel a great loyalty to the Moss Valley region".
An extraordinary winter season comes to an end. Last weekend, skiing operations in the Moosalpregion were suspended as planned. But the effects of Corona also leave their mark in the Moosalpregion. We arranged to meet Selina Döringer, Managing Director of Moosalp Bergbahnen AG, on the "Ober Arb" for a summit talk.
Interview: Bruno Kalbermatten
What thoughts go through your mind when you think about this extraordinary winter season?
The end of the season is always associated with melancholy for me. Because the winter goes by much too quickly for me. The fact that we currently have the best slope conditions with the most beautiful sunshine in the Moosalpregion does not make the end of the season any easier. On the other hand, the winter was a great challenge due to the worldwide pandemic. The hope is great that next year we will be able to enjoy the winter in the usual freedom.
What challenges is the Moosalpregion facing because of the pandemic?
Mastering the winter season with the constant uncertainty was not easy. Until shortly before the start of the season, it was unclear whether we would be allowed to start skiing at all. Then, over the festive season, there was discussion about whether there should be another lockdown. There was also talk of an interruption in January. And last but not least, there was again the uncertainty whether skiing would be allowed in February or not. This uncertainty as to how and whether the season could be brought to a close was challenging for us as mountain railway operators, but also as winter sports enthusiasts. The employees always had to react very flexibly and put in a lot of extra effort so that our guests could safely enjoy the winter wonderland of the Moosalpregion throughout the winter.
What impact has this difficult winter had on the Moss Valley region?
In the coming days we will take stock. It is already clear that the mountain railroads have made large losses. Nevertheless, there are large but absolutely necessary investments to be made: The revision of the chairlift will be continued or new snow groomers have to be purchased. In addition, the cost-intensive hangers of several ski lifts have to be renewed and high investments in the turnstiles are pending. All these investments are essential for the continued operation of Moosalp Bergbahnen, but are almost invisible to the guest. After this difficult season, these investments will not be easy to implement financially. Talks with partners and suppliers have to be held and we hope for support from our environment. It would be wrong to fall into a state of shock now. We are looking ahead and working towards the future.
Despite these headwinds, the Moosalpregion trumped with novelties?
In fact, we were able to launch two new offers this winter season. Although the new Brack.ch Skimovie only opened during the season, we count around 10,000 rides on this route. That is a complete success. In addition, the Freeridecross Moosalpregion was launched. This course was actively used and appreciated by skiers. The positive feedback from guests and locals shows us how well these innovations complement the offer and make the Moosalpregion even more attractive for winter sports enthusiasts.
After the winter comes the summer. What can you look forward to in the Moosalpregion?
We live in a unique natural setting. In this beauty we may move and decelerate. We are also looking forward to events in the Moosalpregion. Behind the scenes, intensive planning is already underway for the "Bärgüf" fundraising event. Because of Corona, "Bärgüf" will be different this year, but no less emotional. And in the summer of 2022, the Tour de Suisse will arrive at Moosalp. We are already planning certain activities for this summer. Furthermore, we are currently working on various new summer events. If events are reasonably possible this summer, we have a very exciting, unprecedented program ahead of us.
What moments gave you courage and confidence during this difficult time?
Especially during the pre-sale Moosalp Bergbahnen AG have felt a great loyalty from guests as well as locals and second home owners. The situation was uncertain. But with the purchase of ski passes, we were shown that guests as well as locals stand behind the Moosalp region and support the area. This has done us good and given us confidence.
But I also sensed a lot of courage and confidence from the employees throughout the winter. The uncertainty has also gnawed at them. But with a lot of dedication and drive, they have shown great commitment to the Moosal region. For this we thank the whole team from the bottom of our hearts. I would also like to take this moment to thank all guests, locals and second home owners for their loyalty.
Milestone for the Moosalpregion
In September 2018, Selina Döringer took over the management of Moosalp Tourismus AG and Moosalp Bergbahnen AG together with Fabrizio Gull. Since then, the Moosalp region has been on the move. On the one hand, the duo Döringer/Gull has made short-term, direct implementations and at the same time created a long-term strategic orientation for the tourimus region. Through the holistic reorientation of the Moosalpregion, Döringer and Gull have left a lasting mark on the tourism development of the entire region of Bürchen and Törbel.
For the reorientation of the Moosalpregion, the young tourism people were awarded the prestigious tourism prize MILESTONE 2020 in the category of young talent. The crisis now poses challenges for the tourism region. However, not least due to the backing and support of locals, guests and second home owners, it is worth fighting in tourism and never giving up.
